Understanding Hidden Pet Fences
As a pet owner, you may be considering an electronic or hidden dog fence to keep your pet safely contained. But before you make the investment, it‘s important to understand how these fences work and how to train your pet to use them. We recently worked with a customer in Port St. Lucie who had similar questions, so maybe this post can help you.
What is static correction?
An electronic or hidden dog fence uses static correction to teach your pet where the boundaries are. When your pet wears a special collar and crosses the boundary of the fence, they will receive a safe, mild shock. The shock is not harmful, but it is unpleasant and will startle your pet.
With proper training, your pet will learn to associate crossing the boundary with the unpleasant shock and will avoid doing so.
How do you train your dog to use an electric dog fence?
Training your dog to use an electric fence is relatively simple, but it does take some time and patience. The first step is to introduce your pet to the boundary flags. Let them sniff and explore the flags, but do not let them cross the boundary.
Next, turn on the fence and allow your pet to approach the boundary. As they get close to the boundary, they will receive a shock. At this point, it is important to use a positive reinforcement such as a dog treat or verbal praise to encourage them to stay away from the boundary.
Repeat this process several times a day for a week or two until your pet is consistently avoiding the boundary. Once they have learned the boundary, you can remove the flags and they will still know where the boundary is.
How long does it take to train a pet to a electronic dog fence and learn new boundaries?
The amount of time it takes to train a pet to an electronic dog fence varies depending on the individual pet. Some pets may learn the boundary in a few days, while others may take a few weeks.
How important is “training” when introducing your pet to a hidden electric fence?
Training is important when introducing your pet to any type of fence, but it is especially important with an electric fence. Without proper training, your pet may become confused and scared, which could lead to them crossing the boundary and receiving a shock.
